How do I know if my pet is having an emergency?

An emergency is defined as whenever the pet owner has an urgent concern regarding their pet. We are here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to aid, assist and care for animals that are suffering from any acute or chronic illness. If you are unsure if something might be an emergency, call our office for advice on the need for an exam.


Can I get medical advice over the phone?

Probably not. Usually we will recommend that you bring your pet in for evaluation so that we can provide the best advice possible. However, if your pet has ingested a KNOWN substance, we may have directions for you to follow prior to bringing your pet in for care.


How are you different than my veterinarian?

Our facility is an extension of your regular veterinarian's practice. We compliment the services of your veterinarian just as a specialist in human medicine helps your family doctor handle specific medical or surgical problems. IndyVet provides advanced emergency and critical care including specialized medical and surgical care, advanced imaging, and alternative care options. We also have one of the largest animal blood banks in Indiana providing immediate, life-saving blood and plasma to our patients. This, along with our skilled and dedicated staff allows us to provide the highest level of care possible.


Will my regular veterinarian be updated on my pet?

Yes. We know you have a relationship with your family veterinarian and recognize that they may provide essential insight into the medical management of your pet's condition. We remain in daily communication with your veterinarian, acting as a team of professionals to provide the best possible care for your pet.


Will you send a copy of the record to my regular veterinarian?

Absolutely. Your pet's wellness relies on your veterinarian having a clear picture of your pet's health history. In order to facilitate this, we will provide a copy of our records to your veterinarian.


Do I need to schedule an appointment?

No. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and are available any time your pet needs care.


What information should I bring with me to IndyVet?

Please bring any medical records and radiographs you may have and write down any medications your pet is taking. If you think your pet has been poisoned, please bring the container of whatever your pet ingested (rat poison, people medication, anti-freeze etc.).


What happens when I get to IndyVet?

When you arrive, a technician will triage the patient to determine if immediate attention from a doctor is required. Those clients with stable patients will be placed into an exam room and will be examined by a doctor as soon as possible. Once the examination is complete, you will be presented with a Care Plan detailing the initial recommendations for care along with the expected costs for the suggested treatment.


Will my pet be alone at night?

No. We have at least one emergency doctor and 3 nurses on duty at all times 24/7/365. We care for your pet around the clock and will take care of any needs that arise overnight and make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible. Each pet is checked and evaluated every one to two hours around the clock.

Can I visit my pet while they are at IndyVet?

Absolutely! We highly encourage visiting your pet. Family visits may help reduce patient stress, improve appetite, and may reduce hospitalization time. Sometimes visitation may not be possible, or limits might be needed to allow the delivery of required critical care. Please speak with the emergency doctor on staff regarding your pet's visitation.


Where do I go for follow up care?

You will usually follow up with your regular veterinarian. Depending upon your pet's condition and disease, or at the discretion of your veterinarian you may return to IndyVet for follow up treatment. IndyVet offers other specialty services such as rehabilitation and may collaborate and partner with your veterinarian to optimize your pet's follow up care. Please ask a customer service representative or the emergency doctor on staff for further information.
