FAQ's
How do I know if my pet has an emergency?
Our facility is an extension of your regular veterinarian. We compliment the services of your veterinarian just as a specialist in human medicine helps your family doctor handle specific problems. IVEC provides advanced emergency and critical care including thorough medical and surgical care, advanced imaging, alternative care options and orthopedic surgery. Additionally, we have one of the largest animal blood banks in Indiana. This and our dedicated staff allow us to provide the highest level of care possible.
How are you different than my veterinarian?
Our facility is an extension of your regular veterinarian. We compliment the services of your veterinarian just as a specialist in human medicine helps your family doctor handle specific problems. IVEC provides advanced emergency and critical care including thorough medical and surgical care, advanced imaging, alternative care options and orthopedic surgery. Additionally, we have one of the largest animal blood banks in Indiana. This and our dedicated staff allow us to provide the highest level of care possible.
Will my regular veterinarian be updated on my pet?
Yes. We know you have a relationship with your family veterinarian and that she or he may provide essential insight into the medical management of your pet's condition. We remain in daily communication with your veterinarian, acting as a team of professionals to provide the best possible care for your pet.
Will you send a copy of the record to my regular veterinarian?
Absolutely. Your pet's wellness relies in part on your veterinarian having a clear picture of your pet's health history. In order to facilitate this, we will provide a copy of our records to your veterinarian.
Can I get medical advice over the phone?
Probably not. Usually we will recommend that you bring your pet in for evaluation so that we can provide the best diagnosis possible. However, if your pet has ingested a KNOWN substance, we may first direct you to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center for specific instructions.
Do I need to schedule an appointment?
No. We are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and are available any time your pet needs care.
What information should I bring with me to IVEC?
Please bring any medical records and radiographs available, also write down any medications your pet is taking. If you think your pet has been poisoned, please bring the container of whatever your pet ingested (rat poison, people medication, anti-freeze etc.).
What happens when I get to IVEC?
When you arrive, we will examine your pet as quickly as possible and the most serious cases will be seen first. If more than one pet arrives at the same time, an examination in progress may be interrupted or a less critical patient may have to wait so that we can help a more critical case. Once the examination is complete, you will be presented with an itemized estimate detailing the initial 24 to 48 hours of hospitalization.
Will my pet be alone at night?
No. We have an emergency doctor on staff 24/7/365 and a host of staff and technicians on premises at all times. We care for your pet around the clock and will take care of any needs that arise overnight and make sure your pet is as comfortable as possible.
Can I visit my pet while they are at IVEC?
Absolutely! Depending on the situation, we highly encourage visiting your pet as family visits may help reduce patient stress. Sometimes visitation may not be possible, or limits might be needed to ensure the best care possible. Please speak with the emergency doctor on staff regarding your pet's visitation.
Where do I go for follow up care?
Depending on your individual case, you may return to your primary veterinarian or to IVEC for follow up treatment. IVEC offers other specialty services (rehabilitation etc.) and will partner with your veterinarian to optimize your pet's care. Please ask a receptionist or the emergency doctor on staff for further information.
