Blood Donor Program - About The Program.
The Canine and Feline Blood Donor Program, provides animal blood for use at veterinary practices throughout Indiana and across the country.
Blood is used by IVEC and other veterinary hospitals for transfusions during emergency treatments. Major surgeries and treatments for poisoning and anemia, also place demands on blood supplies.
IVEC's Canine and Feline Blood Donor Program collects and stores blood. Each unit of whole blood is broken down into packed red blood cells and plasma. Nothing is wasted and each unit can save 2-4 pets. Packed red blood cells have a shelf life of 42 days, while plasma can be stored for five years.
