IVEC honored with prestigious Department of Defense Patriot Award
Joe Huber, executive director of Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC), accepted the Department of Defense Patriot Award on behalf of IVEC employee Sgt. Felicya Adams, 310th ESC USAR on Wednesday, Dec. 15. The presentation was made at the 24-hour critical care veterinary medicine facility located at 5425 Victory Drive, on the city's southeast side.
Douglas Gibbens, executive director of the Indiana Committee's Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), presented the award to Huber. The Patriot Award is designed to acknowledge employers who support a strong National Guard and Reserve force.
"We are very proud to be recognized with such a prestigious award," Huber said. "It has been a pleasure working with Sgt. Adams thus far, and we are eager to welcome her back to IVEC upon her return to the states from active duty."
Employers qualify for recognition when they practice leadership and personnel policies that support employee participation in the Guard and Reserve. Businesses like IVEC, Gibbens noted, play a critical role in the defense of the nation by complying with existing employment laws that protect rights of workers who serve in the Reserve component.
The nation's Reserve components comprise approximately 48 percent of total available military manpower. Military personnel like Sgt. Adams spend more time away from the workplace defending the nation and training to maintain their mission readiness.
ESGR was established in 1972 to promote cooperation and understanding between Reserve component members and their civilian employers, and to assist in the resolution of conflicts arising from an employee's military commitment.
Sgt. Adams assisted in caring for animals as they came to and from the emergency-care facility. The IVEC employee is scheduled to deploy to Iraq in 2011.
