Indianapolis Veterinary Referral receives approval from NRC to administer Iodine 131 isotope therapy
Indianapolis Veterinary Referral (IVR), has been licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to administer radioactive Iodine 131 isotope therapy to cats suffering from hyperthyroidism. IVR, an affiliate of Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC), 5425 Victory Drive, Indianapolis, joins an elite group of US veterinary medicine facilities authorized to administer this treatment.
Hyperthyroidism, or excessive thyroid function disease, is a common ailment in cats age 8 years and older. The disease is caused by a small tumor that develops on the animal’s thyroid gland. Symptoms include excessive hunger accompanied by weight loss, hyperactivity, poor hair coat appearance, and, in some instances, the development of heart disease. Anorexia and lethargy also may be present.
Veterinary medicine experts consider radioactive Iodine 131 isotope therapy to be the best treatment option since only one injection is required. The iodine is absorbed by the thyroid gland, and radiation from the isotope destroys the tumor within days. Surgery or other invasive therapies are not required.
Felines treated with radioactive Iodine 131 are hospitalized for three days at IVR in a special radiation confinement area. After three days, any radiation retained by the patient has reduced to levels that make it safe for their discharge from the clinic.
Cats with hyperthyroidism can be admitted to IVR and receive treatment within a week of diagnosis.
