Healthy Hounds Challenge: IVEC Kics-off New Weight-Loss / Fitness Program
The Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC), in association with Royal Canin dog food, and Novartis will kickoff their new canine weight-loss/fitness program Healthy Hounds with a four-legged weight-loss challenge.
This Biggest Loser-type competition will combine nutrition and fitness to help 12 overweight canines from central Indiana begin the process of weight-loss and move toward a healthier, happier life.
The winner will receive a year of care at their personal veterinarian, compliments of IVEC. All contestants will also receive other gifts and discounted services.
All local residents and veterinarians whose pudgy pooches qualify are welcome to participate. For more information on qualifications and to register for the competition, contact IVEC's Amy Waggoner at 317/782.4418 by March 23, 2009.
The eight-week challenge will begin on March 30 and run through Memorial Day weekend. Results from the Healthy Hounds challenge will be announced the week of May 25. The overall winner will be the dog that has lost the highest percentage of body fat in the eight-week period.
"For the past year, the physicians [at IVEC] and I have been working to create a weight-loss program for dogs and it has finally all fallen into place," said Amy Waggoner, RVT CCRA.
Healthy Hounds is a year-round weight-loss program designed to help dogs reach their goal weights, as well as help owners learn food and exercise management for their furry best friend.
"Not every dog is the same and we have created the program to cater to each of their needs. Some dogs will reach their goal weight in a few weeks, while others will need many months," explained Waggoner.
After an initial visit and evaluation, each qualified canine will get a specific diet and exercise regimen tailored specifically to his or her needs.
"We just want to make sure that all Indianapolis area canines are healthy and happy," Waggoner stated.
