Your Dog Might Have to Shed a Few Pounds

Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center has teamed up with veterinarians across the nation for the first-ever National Canine Weight Check.

During February, owners can bring their dogs to IVEC, 5425 Victory Drive, for a free weight analysis to determine whether the dogs are at their correct weight. Call IVEC's Amy Waggoner or Karrie Gomez at (317) 782-4418 for more information or to book an appointment.

Canine obesity is a growing problem. Out of an estimated 41 million dogs in the U.S., about 17 million are overweight.

Obesity can shorten the life of a pet and bring on osteoarthritis, heart disease, respiratory conditions,. heat or exercise intolerance, a compromised immune system, leg and back problems and increased risk during anesthesia and surgery.
