National Dog Day: Remember to Take Care of Your Fur Friends
On August 26, Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC)
wants everyone to remember his or her furry best friend as you celebrate National Dog
Day.
Founded in 2004, National Dog Day recognizes the number of dogs that need rescued each
year, and acknowledges family dogs and dogs that work selflessly each day to save lives,
keeping us safe and bringing comfort.
The creation of pet lifestyle expert and author Colleen Paige, National Dog Day honors
dogs and gives them "a day" to depict the deep appreciation for our long connection to
each other. It honors their endearing patience, unquestioning loyalty, their work, and their
capacity for love. It highlights a dog’s ability to impact our lives everyday in the most
miraculous ways.
With this in mind, IVEC suggests that dog owners take special care Thursday to make sure
Fido’s checkups are current, all vaccines are up-to-date, your animals are micro-chipped,
and to ensure your dogs are safe and comfortable in the home.
IVEC also recommends pet owners prepare themselves for the unexpected and have a plan
in place in the event of a medical emergency. Preparation is easy and can be handled by
following these five simple steps:
- Do not panic. Remember to stay calm, follow your safety plan and transport your
pet safely to a veterinary emergency center.
- Know and have all emergency numbers close. Posting numbers of your veterinarian
and veterinary emergency center can save time in an emergency.
- Create a pet first aid kit. Having basic first aid tools and knowing how to use them
can be lifesaving.
- Attend a pet first aid and CPR course. It is vitally important to have basic
knowledge to provide basic emergency care in any situation. IVEC conducts public
Animal First Aid & CPR classes periodically throughout the year.
- Planning, Planning, Planning. Write out a plan or checklist for what to do in an emergency.
