IACC's Adam Garrett honored with IVEC PETS Award at 13th Pet Carnival
Adam Garrett, community outreach coordinator for Indianapolis Animal Care & Control (IACC), was honored by Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC) as the 2011 recipient of the Professional Excellence Through Service, or PETS Award, Saturday, July 9 at IVEC’s 13th annual Pet Carnival.
The PETS Award was created over a decade ago by IVEC to honor individuals or organizations that demonstrate such qualities as outstanding community service, dedication and love to animals of all shapes and sizes.
Dr. James Speiser, founder and owner of IVEC, surprised this year's recipient with the prestigious award right after Garrett had wrapped up judging the Best Pet Trick competition. "Essentially, Adam is the voice of thousands of animals throughout Indianapolis who are simply looking for that chance to be a faithful companion," Speiser said during the presentation.
As part of the IACC staff, Garrett views pet ownership as a lifetime commitment and works tirelessly to find sheltered animals their forever homes. He can be found many evenings and almost every weekend at adoption events, looking not only to improve the lives of the animals, but to find people fortunate enough to adopt them as well.
IACC encourages the adoptions of pets, promotes responsible pet ownership and works to enhance the health and safety of the community. In 2010, IACC cared for approximately 17,750 homeless, surrendered, abused, neglected, and abandoned animals.
Their service to the city includes issuing citations to people in violation of animal ordinances; conducting inspections for the licensing of facilities that sell, groom, and kennel animals; investigating cruelty, neglect and animal-fighting cases, and responding to complaints related to animals and animal welfare; and rescuing animals in distress or danger on an emergency basis.
IVEC collected more than 300 pet-related items and nearly $150 in cash donations at this year's Pet Carnival, portions of which will go to IACC.
Past recipients of the IVEC PETS Award include:
- Robyn Collier of Molly's Meals
- Marion County Sheriff's Department K9 Corps
- Joni Michels of RTV6
- The Tony Stewart Foundation, and
- Indiana Pacers mascot, Boomer.
