IndyVet hosts holiday pet drive for Humane Society of Johnson County
IndyVet Emergency & Specialty Hospital, formerly known as Indianapolis Veterinary Emergency Center (IVEC), is partnering with four of its referral veterinary clinics to collect pet food and a wide array of supplies to care for animals at the Humane Society of Johnson County.
All five drop-off sites, including IndyVet, will accept contributions up until Jan. 1, 2014. IndyVet is open 24 hours, even during the holidays, and is located at 5425 Victory Drive, just south and east of the I-465 & South Emerson Avenue interchange near Beech Grove.
"It's important for our community to remember our four-legged friends during giving season, especially the homeless," said Dr. James Speiser, DVM, DABVP, CCRT, founder of IndyVet. "Our practice is a place ‘where care comes first,' so we want to give surrendered and sheltered animals that same sense of comfort by helping provide basic necessities."
The Humane Society of Johnson County intakes a range of 291-355 animals annually, and provides pet food, toys, treats, pet food and cat litter to dogs in its "Shelter Without Walls" foster care program, and cats housed at the facility.
Last year, the organization ran a Pet Food Pantry program twice a month to assist low-income families in feeding their pets to keep them in their home and out of the shelter. "But because of dwindling donations in the past year, we've scaled back to offering food just once a month," said Janet Gorrell, Humane Society of Johnson County director of operations.
"The demand (for food) is there though," she added.
